Essential Precautions for Storing Film-Faced Construction Formwork

In concrete formwork management, the service life and performance of Film-Faced Plywood (Formply) are heavily influenced by environmental conditions during storage. While film-faced panels are engineered with waterproof adhesives (WBP) and protective phenolic resin coatings, improper on-site storage before or between uses can lead to premature warping, edge swelling, and panel surface degradation.
As a professional manufacturer committed to delivering durable engineered wood products, Roggewood provides factual, site-proven guidelines to help contractors safeguard their formwork inventory, maximize reuse cycles, and avoid unnecessary material costs.
1. Ground Support & Stacking Geometry
Improper physical stacking causes structural stress and permanent panel deformation before boards are even installed:
Flat Level Elevation: Stacks must be positioned on flat, well-drained ground. Never lean panels vertically against walls or store them on uneven surfaces, as this leads to permanent bowing and warping.
Uniform Dunnage Spacing: Support stacks using level timber bearers (dunnage) spaced 50 cm to 60 cm apart. Align bearers vertically across multiple stacked pallets to prevent localized sagging.
Safe Stack Heights: Keep stack heights within safe vertical limits (typically under 4–5 pallets high) to avoid crush damage on lower panels and prevent tipping hazards on site.
2. Key Storage Hazards & Preventive Controls
| Storage Hazard | Technical Impact & Recommended Preventive Measures |
| Ground Moisture & Standing Water | Ground dampness can penetrate untreated stacked edges. Elevate stacks at least 10–15 cm off the ground using dry timber bearers and avoid low-lying area storage where water collects. |
| Trapped Condensation under Covers | Tightly wrapping stacks in plastic tarpaulins without ventilation traps ground moisture, causing micro-mold growth and face staining. Use waterproof covers elevated off the top, leaving open sides for continuous cross-ventilation. |
| Direct Solar UV Exposure | Prolonged exposure to intense sunlight accelerates phenolic resin oxidation and dries out face veneers, leading to surface micro-cracking. Store panels under shade or under light-colored UV-resistant tarps. |
| Edge Seal Degradation | Cut edges or chipped factory sealant are prone to moisture intake. Inspect stored inventory regularly and apply waterproof acrylic/alkyd paint over any exposed wood fibers prior to long-term storage. |
3. Post-Stripping Storage Preparation
Proper care immediately following formwork removal is essential before returning panels to storage:
Prompt Surface Cleaning: Remove wet concrete residue using water and plastic scrapers or stiff brushes immediately after stripping. Avoid metal wire brushes that scratch phenolic resin layers.
Drying Before Stacking: Allow wet panels to air-dry naturally before re-stacking. Stacking wet panels directly on top of each other promotes trapped moisture pockets and edge swelling.
Sorted Repacking: Group panels by size and condition. Separate panels requiring edge resealing or minor repairs to streamline subsequent installation workflow.
