Film-faced plywood-often known as shuttering plywood, formply, or marineplex-is an essential material in modern concrete construction. Its durable surface film and robust core structure enable it to endure moisture, mechanical impacts, and chemical erosion during concrete pouring.

However, not all film-faced plywood is created equal. Understanding the common classifications of film-faced plywood helps buyers and project contractors select the ideal board for their budget, reuse requirements, and structural needs.

At Shandong Rogge Wood Co., Ltd. (Roggewood), situated in China's largest wood-based panel manufacturing hub in Linyi, Shandong, we manufacture and supply tailored formwork solutions for global construction markets. Here is how film-faced plywood is classified across the industry.

Classification by Glue & Bonding Grade

Glue quality directly dictates whether the plywood will delaminate when exposed to water and harsh weather.

WBP Phenolic Glue: Waterproof and boil-proof (capable of passing 24 to 72 hours of boiling tests without delamination). Essential for heavy-duty outdoor formwork.

WBP Melamine Glue: Offers good moisture resistance (withstanding 6 to 24 hours in boiling water) and serves medium-reuse applications efficiently.

MR (Moisture Resistant) Glue: Intended primarily for dry or temporary indoor applications; not recommended for high-moisture concrete formwork.

Classification by Manufacturing Process (Hot Pressing)

The pressing method impacts the panel's internal bond strength and surface flatness.

Two-Time Hot Press (Double Press): The core is hot-pressed and sanded smooth before applying the film for a second hot press. This ensures high structural stability, even thickness, and a smooth finish.

One-Time Hot Press (Single Press): The core veneers and surface film are pressed in a single step. It lowers production costs but may show slight core telegraphing on the surface.

Roggewood's Quality Commitment

Choosing the correct film-faced plywood classification prevents jobsite delays and reduces overall material costs. At Shandong Rogge Wood, every shipment undergoes strict quality control-from core veneer grading and WBP glue formulation to waterproof acrylic edge sealing.
