The Production Process of Film-Faced Plywood: Inside Roggewood’s Quality Manufacturing Line

n commercial concrete construction, a film-faced plywood panel is only as reliable as the precision of its manufacturing line. Behind every shuttering board capable of enduring 10 to 20+ concrete pours lies a strict multi-stage industrial production workflow.
Small variances during production-such as uneven core veneer moisture, improper resin spread, or incomplete hot-press curing-can lead to severe site failures, including internal delamination, surface blistering, and edge swelling.
At Roggewood (Shandong Rogge Wood Industry), located in China's timber manufacturing center of Linyi, strict quality control is integrated into every step of our production line. This guide provides a detailed walk-through of our industrial production process for high-cycle film-faced plywood.

1. Timber Selection, Conditioning & Precision Peeling
Production begins with high-density raw logs (Eucalyptus, Hardwood, Pine, or Poplar) selected for structural integrity and fiber straightness.
* Steam Conditioning: Logs are soaked in warm water tanks to soften wood fibers, ensuring smooth rotary peeling without surface micro-cracks.
* Rotary Lathe Peeling: High-speed equipment peels logs into uniform veneer sheets with precise thicknesses (typically 1.5\text{ mm} to 2.2\text{ mm}).
2. Automated Jet Drying & Moisture Content Control
Freshly peeled veneers carry moisture levels exceeding 50\%–80\%. Excess water trapped inside veneers causes high-pressure steam pops and delamination during hot pressing.
* Continuous Roller Jet Dryers: Veneers pass through multi-tier roller jet dryers operated at 140^\circ\text{C} to 180^\circ\text{C}.
* Target Moisture (8\%–12\%): Moisture content is brought down to a strict 8\%–12\% window. Automated inline sensors detect and reject any over-moist veneers for re-drying.
3. Veneer Grading, Repair & Full-Sheet Core Composing
A seamless internal core is essential to prevent air pockets and maintain bending strength under liquid concrete pressure.
* Defect Trimming & Grading: Dry veneers are inspected to trim away natural knots, splits, and weak edges.
* Core Composing: Short veneer pieces are scarf-jointed or edge-bonded into continuous full-size sheets, eliminating internal core voids.
4. Resin Glue Spread & Orthotropic Layup
Adhesive formulation and layup alignment determine weatherability and flexural rigidity.
* WBP Resin Coater: Double-sided roller coaters apply a uniform weight of thermosetting 100% Phenolic or Melamine WBP adhesive.
* Orthotropic Layering: Plies are laid up with alternating 90-degree grain orientations. An odd number of plies (e.g., 9, 11, 13 layers) is arranged symmetrically around the neutral axis to prevent board twisting.
5. Two-Step Hot Pressing & Calibration Sanding
Roggewood uses a Two-Times Hot Press (Two-Step) manufacturing process to guarantee density and structural bonding.
* Pre-Cold Pressing: Assembled veneer stacks undergo hydraulic cold pressing to consolidate plies and allow glue penetration.
* First Hot Pressing (Core Curing): The core matrix is cured under high hydraulic pressure and elevated temperatures (120^\circ\text{C}–140^\circ\text{C}), turning liquid adhesive into an insoluble polymer network.
* Dual-Side Calibration Sanding: Heavy-duty wide-belt sanders grind both core faces to eliminate thickness variations, providing a flat surface for film application.
6. Phenolic Film Overlay & Second Hot Pressing
Applying the outer protective film requires a dedicated high-precision pressing cycle.
* Film Paper Alignment: High-density phenolic film paper (120\text{g/m}^2–220\text{g/m}^2, in black, brown, or premium Dynea overlay) is placed on both faces of the sanded core.
* Second Hot Pressing: Specialty stainless-steel mirror plates apply heat and pressure, melting the phenolic resin paper directly into the outer wood fibers.
7. Trimming, Multi-Layer Edge Sealing & Final Inspection
The final stage prepares the board to resist moisture exposure on active job sites.
* Precision Edge Trimming: High-speed tenoners trim panels to exact dimensions, maintaining a strict thickness tolerance within \pm 0.5\text{ mm}.
* Waterproof Acrylic Edge Coating: All four edges receive multi-coat waterproof acrylic or phenolic paint to seal end-grain wood fibers against moisture entry.
* Quality Assurance Stamping: Random batch samples undergo 24 to 72-hour boiling tests, density checks, and flexural stress testing before receiving factory certification stamps.
Production Process Summary
